  1. 2.8 Ish-bosheth: “Man of shame.” The name was really Ish-baal, “Man or servant of Baal,” but the writer could not bring himself to pronounce so profane a name, especially as it belonged to an Israelite; cf. 1 Chron 8.33; 9.39, where the name is given as Esh-baal.
